Dieting is a part of our modern culture. Vast numbers of people are on diets or contemplating one. But, with the vast numbers of diets available, it becomes a greater task to learn about the basics of any diet you are considering. Just about all diets will encourage you to stay away meat, cut back on the carbohydrates and/or concentrate on the vegetables and fruits. Despite this, the Paleo diet is distinctive because it is how the very first humans ate.

What is the Paleo Diet? Paleo is short for paleolithic, which is also known to us as the Stone Age. The main theory here is that this diet is the same as the diet of the first humans, who, by the way, were not plagued with the diseases and illness of the modern man. According to the Paleo Diet, we are not genetically designed to consume the foods the we eat today, wheats, grains, dairy and processed foods. The Paleo Diet mimics the foods that the caveman ate. The key foods are one that are high in nutritional value like, fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats. The foods that we should shy away from are food ingredients that advanced following the agriculture revolution such as grains, sugar, salt and dairy. These ingredients can lead to an increase in risk to health problems and higher weight.

Farming, the cultivation of wheat and other plants, did not even exist until approximately 10,000 years ago. The Paleolithic Era, the period from which this eating plan is derived, ended about 20,000 years ago.

Athletes tend to flock towards this diet because of the naturally high protein content. Chicken, lean meat, fish fruit and vegetables are essential parts to this diet. When selecting vegetables, you should opt for root vegetables and keep away from others like potatoes. These foods contain unhealthy additives which can be harmful to your good health.

"Why should I switch", you may be asking, well, now that you have heard the basics, this should be an easy decision, but there are many more benefits to the Paleo Diet. First off, you will loose weight on the Paleo Diet because of it's low calorie count due to it's innate low carbs. A low carb diet can help reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease. Another advantage to this diet is the high fiber component, which can lower the risk of diabetes and help you to loose weight.
